International Global Citizen's Award

encouraging young people to become better global citizens

Being good or doing good with money? Should we change the heading?

One of the components of the Award is Being good with money, which forms part of the Personal Global Footprint section. The Personal Global Footprint section looks at ways in which everyday actions and decisions of people, have impact on the lives of others and on the environment.

But “Being good with money” is not self-explanatory, and some recent contacts with centres suggest that it may be appropriate to clarify what is included here or re-name it.

In everyday language, a person is good with money if they are able to manage their own finances well – avoiding debt, budgeting sensibly etc.

This is an important skill, and a number of schools work with students in this area.

However, this is not what is intended in the IGC Award.

In the IGC Award, Being good with money is concerned with the good we are able to do with money – the beneficial consequences for others and the environment of using money in ways which take account of its impact.

A better heading might be Doing good with money.

Feedback please – should, we change the heading to Doing good with money?

Please contribute here - deadline 30 APRIL 2015
