Think.Eat.Save - World Environment Day theme 2013

World Environment Day

Wednesday 5 June was World Environment Day.

Although the day has passed, its theme Think. Eat. Save is a welcome reminder of our impact on others and the environment through our daily lives. The theme encourages us to - Think before you eat and help save our environment!

It is one we can embrace or re-emphasise at any time and follows on from IGC Award message in December 2012 on the food we eat:

The following sets the scene for the theme:

“According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. This is equivalent to the same amount produced in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time, 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger.  “

There is an A to Z of actions that we can take to Think. Eat. Save:

We need to remember, though, that action needs to be informed. Buying locally is not always better than buying from abroad, for instance. Sometimes the energy and resources expended in local production (for instance of some out of season fruit and vegetables) can exceed total energy and resources used in production and transport of products from abroad.
