International Global Citizen's Award

encouraging young people to become better global citizens

At MBIS we have just begun our IGC journey and the first 3 weeks have gone very well.  We have 18 students who have opted to start the IGC award, aged 11-14 years old.  We will meet as a group as part of the school's after school activities programme, so far having had 3 meetings.

Meeting 1: Students were made aware of the components of the Award and the Ning space, we brainstormed ideas for what we could do towards each component.  Students were also asked to write about their hopes/expectations/ideas about citizenship and how the Award might change them.  They were given a lined book to use as a diary and ideas for how to use it.

Meeting 2: We did some brainstorming and research on what ethical shopping is about, in order to prepare for our next meeting.  Year 7 and 8 students have already studied this in Geography so it was useful to share their knowledge with the younger Year 6 students.

Meeting 3: Students worked in small groups on creating a poster that informed/persuaded others to consider the issues of ethical shopping.  We will display these around school.

The students seem very keen so far and some have already been doing individual Community Service activities outside of the club.

Plans for forthcoming meetings ...

  •  ideas for fund-raising projects, research local charities
  • Discuss and implement an Eco community service event, perhaps a litter pick outside school
  • Trips to charity projects and a fair trade shop

In school between 11-16th March we will be having "International Week" which will give students a range of opportunities to find out about other countries and cultures, through a variety of different activities.  IGC students will be asked to record their experiences in their diaries.

I am excited about how this initiative has started at MBIS and I hope that some of the students themselves will write something for our blog in the future.

It's great to read how things have started in Egypt. The students may be interested to know that they are the first people in the counttry to be taking part in the IGC Award.

I hope preparations for International Week are going well.

I did mention that to them and they were rather excited about that!  We are looking forward to International Week it is one of our favourite weeks of the year in MBIS, the children enjoy such a range of activities and perhaps most importantly there is a strong focus on FOOD!
