The first 3 weeks of IGC at MBIS

At MBIS we have just begun our IGC journey and the first 3 weeks have gone very well.  We have 18 students who have opted to start the IGC award, aged 11-14 years old.  We will meet as a group as part of the school's after school activities programme, so far having had 3 meetings.

Meeting 1: Students were made aware of the components of the Award and the Ning space, we brainstormed ideas for what we could do towards each component.  Students were also asked…

What is your 'slavery footprint'?

Firstly I musty apologise if this website has been shared here already (I cant remember where I got it from, and have a suspicious feeling that Boyd Roberts was the source?).

Anyways, connected to the consumer aspect of the IGC Award, the website www.slaveryfootprint.org premise is that some of the daily products we use contain parts made by forced laborers. Your TOTAL SLAVERY FOOTPRINT represents the number of…

New to the Award

Hi,  my name is Linzi from Australian International School, Jakarta.  We are new to the award and as we are not an IB school we are undertaking the award on a pretty ad hoc basis with a small group of students, trying it all out and seeing whether o r not we can find a place for it in our school.

We have a small group of students who have come together through mutual interest.  We have connections with a charitable trust and deliver Englich classes, homework help and IT…

Where do the Award plaques come from?

The wooden Award plaques come in various African designs (see photos for some examples).

Now we are in the award season you may like to look at a brief video clip of the craftsmen at the 'Co-operative Wend La Mita' in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso who make the Award plaques – at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gNss9JCKBw (This has a French commentary).

Wend La Mita translates to "God Understands" in the More…

Blogging at ABC El Salvador

The IGCA team of mentors and participants at the Academia Británica Cuscatleca in El Salvador have been blogging about the various activities they have been taking part in. You can view this at http://igcaabc.blogspot.com/

At ABC a number of the activities have been undertaken as a team. There are many very worthwhile activities that can be undertaken as a group, to complement those taken by participants on an individual

basis…

Help!

Hi all, this is the 4th year I've been involved in the Award and I find that I have only one student participating in the award at my school. This is due to a conflict of scheduling with a number of other activities including the International Award. Anyway, my one student is super keen and I am seeking any other school that wants to do some colloborative work (via email/wiki/skype/other) because my student is probably already sick of only have me to discuss with!.

If you are… Continue

Resources - and how we can share them effectively

It's great that Peter has started a discussion on sharing resources.

However, I've found a difficulty. In replying to the initial discussion, it's diffiicult to incloude hyperlinks. So I'm adding information about some resources but as new discussions.

Perhaps I haven't fathomed how to use Ning propoerly. If anyone can help on this, then please do!

Recording and reflecting

It's now that time of year when students are putting together their portfolio of evidence to present to the group for the Award. Despite guarentees of regular recording, a number of the student I work with haven't really done a great job of recording/logging the activities they have been involved. I came up with the attached spreadsheet to help students record their activities.

We have two teachers who are sharing the coordination - Walter Arevalo and Carmen Villalta. Walter already runs what we call the Guardians of the Environment which is really taking off in the school. We have appointed two grade 11 and two grade 12 students as our Student IGCA Leaders (they will also do the Bronze Award). Bronze Award Completed

The three girls taking part in IGC have done a wonderful job this year. Towards the end of the year they gave up every single one of their lunchtimes voluntarily to sort the toys they had collected, paint furniture and even go on a trip to IKEA to buy the extra toys they wanted for the underwater theme of the waiting room. When the big day came they worked really hard at the hospital until the room was finished and looked an absolute treat! The consultant who was the liason was visibly but… Continue

Update on Budapest

The IGC girls have been as busy as bees during the last few months. Firstly, with the rest of the Year 7's they organised and ran a fairtrade lunch and day. Following research and letters to fairtrade organisations as well as big food companies the girls identified where fairtrade products could be sourced in Budapest-not an easy task! They then wrote a menu and found recipes, went shopping for the goods, cooked and prepared a lunch for the whole of Year 7 plus some other very distinguished… Continue

The English Academy, Kuwait - Award trip to Thailand

A group of ten students and two teachers from The English Academy took a trip to Phuket, Thailand, at the end of January 2009. This group was an amalgamation of Gold International Award and International Global Citizenship Award students, some participants in both awards. The purpose of the trip was to volunteer our time at The Jumpstart Center, run by The Asia Center Foundation in Phuket, and help them paint and furnish their facility. We were also able to take advantage of the partnership… Continue

IGC Award at St Timothy's School, USA - March 2008

In October of 2007, Randy Stevens, Head of School, approached me about inviting girls in the sophomore class to participate in the International Global Citizen Award. As the class advisor for this group of 44 girls, I was responsible for explaining and introducing the students to the program and soliciting their participation. Upon the recommendations of several of the students’ teachers, seven girls were invited and agreed to participate.

Several early brainstorming meetings took… Continue
